An Exploratory Design Of College Students’envy Scale And Related Analysis

Envy is a negative emotional experience wildly existed in social life. Envy can not merely influence mental health but also cause serious behavior consequence. As a special group of society, college students from their stable attitudes toward life and values in this key period of growth. So the study of envy of college students has great importance. Analyze the envy and its characteristics can help students understanding themselves deeply and receive specific intervene if needed.Base on the researches review and open-ended questionnaire, the study puts forward a theoretical hypothesis about envy of college students. And the researcher compile preliminary questionnaire of envy, then forms the formal edition after testing and revising. This study has investigated820colleges from Sichuan, Chongqing, Shandong with the formal scale, and inspect characteristics of envy, then analyze the effect of gender, grade, ground and singleton, also the mediate model of envy, self-esteem and mental health was investigated. The results of study show that:(1)The self-designed envy scale of colleges is of high reliability and fair validity, and it can be used as a good measure of envy of undergraduates. The factor analysis indicate that envy scale has five dimensions:interpersonal relationship envy, financial condition envy, study envy, occupation envy, appearance envy.(2)The level of colleges’ envy is under the medium. The level of each dimension from highest to lowest ranges as follows:interpersonal relationship envy, financial condition envy, study envy, occupation envy, and appearance envy.(3)Significant difference in gender has been found in general envy, financial condition envy, study envy and occupation envy; male students are significant higher than female students.(4)There is a significant difference in financial condition envy between different grades, the levels of four grades from highest to the lowest are as follows:sophomore, junior, freshman, senior.(5)Significant difference in general envy, financial condition envy, appearance envy and occupation envy between different grounds has been found, and colleges from town and city are significant lower than colleges from country and village.(6)Non-only child is significant higher than only child in general envy, financial condition envy, occupation envy.(7)Self-esteem partial mediate the association between envy and mental health. Envy can influence mental health in two ways, one is directly, and the other is indirectly through self-esteem.
