Pursuit of self-expression, yearn for the expression of subjective ideal world, and using enthusiastic forms to highlight the natural performance are main features of Romanticism. Ancient Chinese literati paintings always pay attention to the expression of personal spirit of appeal. With the development of politics, economy and culture, this trend became increasingly fierce in the Ming and Qing dynasties.The feudal rebellious spirit of literati painters stand out, and literati painting mature. At this time, painting creation becomes not only an entertainment but also an emotion of anger. Literati painters use vivid ink, exaggerated modeling and simple natural scene to express their strong subjective feelings. Such as, natural and unrestrained artistic conception of Xu Wei in freehand brushwork, exaggerated deformation of Cheng Hongshou in Chinese figures painting, etc. Both of them focus on personality, aesthetic information and expressed the strong feelings in creation, reflecting strong romantic feelings of idealization, personalization, and liberalization. Although the romantic concept is put forward in the west of18th century, and there is no romantic aesthetic concept in ancient China, but there have been romantic aesthetic forms in the ancient Chinese art, thus romanticism can be linked with the ancient Chinese art phenomenon. By understand the spirit of romanticism can we realize unique emotional appeal and pure sentiment in the literati paintings deeply.
