Restricted by the war factor, the translation activities during the wartime wentthrough a comparatively low point, which led to the lack of researches incontemporary translation studies. However, it does not mean that the translationactivities during this period lack research value. On the contrary, due to the impact ofthe special historical background, the translation activities during this period showeda lot of characteristics. Time and Tide Literature is an important literary journal thatcovers translated works of Britain, America, Soviet Union, and so on. Nevertheless,existing studies on this journal, and even the whole war period, are limited to providean overall research on a macroscopic scale. Few attentions are paid to the research oftranslation features, methods and strategies on the basis of a thorough analysis of thetexts. With regard to this, the thesis attempts to make a systematic study on thetranslated British short stories in Time and Tide Literature. It is expected to reveal thefeatures and strategies in British short story translation, contributing to the researchof translation activities during the wartime.This thesis explores the historical background and the mainstream ideology ona macro level in the first place, based on which the impact on the translationactivities of Time and Tide Literature is investigated. Historical materials arecollected to discuss the achievements made by Time and Tide Literature in thetranslating of British short stories so that the translation features and influence can berevealed. On a micro level, this thesis explains the selection of translation strategiesby Time and Tide Literature in the translating of British short stories from theperspective of Skopos theory. Detailed textual analyses are given as examples tosupport the author’s viewpoint.This thesis attempts to reveal the achievements made by Time and TideLiterature in the translating of British short stories from both the macro and microaspects. It is expected to serve as a reference for later studies on the translation activities during the wartime, and to attract more attentions on the translationresources of wartime Chongqing.
