In the process of learning a foreign language, all language students are influencedby theirfirst language and the language used by their teacher. We are convinced thatboth the students’results and their attitude are influenced by the language teacher uses in class. This thesis mainly focuses on characteristics of Korean native teachers and foreignteachers, and the differences between them,we were also trying to find a better teachingmethod for Korean students of Chinese. We observed the performance of Korean and Chineseteachers, and made a comparison of the two. By analyzing the results,we found out thatKorean native teachers tend to use the grammar-translation methodand comparative method, while foreign teachers prefer the direct method. This thesis uses questionnaire to survey that students at different learning stages displaydifferent attitudes to being taught in their mother tongue and being taught in Chinese. Thestudents in the primary stage often feel under pressure when the teacheronly uses Chinese.Students in the middle and advancedstages experience this difficulty to a certain extent aswell. This means that the use of mother tongue in class plays a positive role in languageteaching. Moreover, students in advanced classes are notdependent on their mother tongueand prefer classes in Chinese. This thesis contains four chapters:The first chapter is introduction. It introduces the research background, goals andit’s significance; it also illustrates the effects of using mother tongue when teaching asecondlanguage and how to efficiently use the mother tongue and the target language. The second chapter focuses on teaching circumstances of Korean native teachers andChinese foreign teachers. It focuses on the questionnaire results, results of interviewingteachers. Statistics based on theseresults are also provided for further reference. The third chapter analyzes these results. It analyzes the influence of first/target languageusage on students‘comprehension and attitude; further, it also makes a contrastive analysis based on different learning phases, and the characteristics of Korean andChinese teachers. The fourth chapter is teaching methods. It analyzes the influence of using Koreanin class, and provides teaching methods for phonetics, lexicon and grammar and discusses how toeffectively utilize bilingual teaching.
