The vehicle handling and stability performance consists of two parts, theability of correctly tracking under driver’s will and the ability of directionkeeping against disturbances. It is a critical factor affecting the driving safety ofvehicles. Especially in the manufacture of high-speed cars, the vehicle handlingand stability is the mainly criterion in vehicle performances evaluation. And howto design a car with good handling and stability performance is a key problemfor all researchers.Simulation technology is being used more and more widely in the field ofengineering. With the development of multi-body dynamics, virtual prototypetechnology was applied to study the vehicle handling and stability performance.The front double wishbone independent Suspension dynamics simulationmodel of some car has been built in the Mechanical System Simulation softwareADAMS/Car, based on the relative motion relationship of the suspensionassembly and their parameters, kinematics simulation analysis has been carriedout, variation regularity of the suspension parameters has been analyzed whenthe car was running. Kinematics sensitivity analysis and optimum structure ofthe built-up model has been done in ADAMS/Insight, based on the suspensionparameters analysis before. Then the structure simplex of suspension system canbe achieved, the effect is obvious. To study suspension’s roll steer performance,the roll movement of front suspension is imitated by opposite wheel travelsimulation test.Furthermore whole vehicle model has been built based on ADAMS, whichinclude the models of front suspension, rear suspension, steering, wheels, power,brake and body. Based on the controllability and stability test procedure forautomobiles, GB/T6323-1994, take Return ability test, Steering efforts testprocedure, Steady static circular test procedure. And analyze the effects that thehorizontal location of orthocenter, the height of gravitational center and thestructural parameter of front suspension bring to the vehicle handling andstability. The whole research concentrated on the exploration and application ofvirtual prototyping technology. Through further study, the relation betweenevaluation index and vehicle structural parameters would be gained. Thus,vehicle dynamic characteristics can be improved and the safety of vehicle can beenhanced.In short, multi-body system dynamics software-MSC.ADAMS provides aeffective tool for vehicle handling stability study. With the continuousdevelopment of the vehicle dynamics and computer simulation technology,virtual prototyping technology, with multi-body system dynamics as its core,will play a greater role in the vehicle dynamics and design.
