Benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH),also called prostatic hypertrophy, mainlyappears in old males. It presents with some paruria symptoms, such as frequency, incontience of urine, urinary retention and dysuria. It can also bring a lot of thesecondary affections, such as vesical calculus, urethral infection and impairment ofrenal function. In a word, it is a symptom complex which has various of distinctivesymptoms and physical sign. It belongs to the category of "retention ofurine",“stranguria” according to its clinical manifestations. In literature freview, thedevelopment of clinical research on traditional Chinese treatment of BPH isinvestigated. The cognitions of the pathogeny as well as the treatment based onsyndrome differentiation of BPH which is attached to “retention of urine” or“stranguria” in ancient and modern times are also listed in literature review. Thispaper discourses professor Su Di’s academic thought and his experiences of Chinesemedical treatment on BPH from its pathogeny, the features of therapies and drug-usedcharacteristics. The total pathogeny of BPH is qi stasis, blood stagnation damp-heatand qi deficiency. These four aspects influence each other. The stasis of damp-heatpathogenic factors is the symptom. The primary deficiency which is the root cause ison kidney. Blood stagnation is its pathological link.Qi propels blood.Qi stasis mainlyappears in the liver losing to control the free flow of qi and the dysfunction of theliver to propel qi.Professor Su Di proposes the treatment principles—addressing boththe symptoms and root causes, and warming justice with clearing. No matterstagnation of damp-heat, insufficiency of kidney yang, the liver failure to control freeflow of qi due to qi stasis or the liver qi stasis, it is all characterized by warming thekidney yang and promoting the blood circulation and dredging meridians, and alongwith regulating the liver qi. In treating BPH, eight powder and the remedies which canpropel qi are applied, and also the flexible modification is very important, such as theseed of cowherd, figwort, pangolin, puctahoe, black cohosh, bupleurum can beadded. It should pay attention to the influences of diet and emotion factors. In treating,it is important to protect the spleen qi,value psychological cownseling andeducate the patients. When treating disease, the factors of time, individual and localcondition is very necessary to be considered. It treats not only the pathologicaldisease, but also the psychological.
