As a special group of expression in Chinese vocabulary, idiomaticwords have not been given commonly accepted definition andclassification in the academic field. Teaching idioms in the class ofteaching Chinese as a foreign language is a comprehensive systembecause it has no rules to follow. As they are often hidden in dialogues orarticles, they thus cannot draw enough attention from foreign students,even some Chinese teachers. However, the test over idiomatic expressionis a compulsory component of HSK (the test of foreign students’ Chineselevel). And foreign students often fail to answer this part. Therefore, tomaster an easy, applicable and efficient teaching methods in this part is anurgent task for teachers in teaching Chinese as foreign language.To free from controversary, the dissertation will firstly outlineidiomatic words in terms of their characteristics, grammatical structure,classification and sources, on the basis of Hu Yushu’s definition overthem and Sun Weizhang’s analysis of their features and categorization. Inthe next part, it will introduce50idiomatic words, which have frequentlyappeared in HSK, before shifting its focus to32idiomatic words fromintermediate and advanced-level test. Then the dissertation will present acomprehensive analysis of these words based on theory of ‘nuclearstresses in terms of their phonetics, semantics as well as grammar. In the last part, the dissertation will make an employment of questionnaire tomake a conclusion of these words, which are troubles of foreign studentsin their Chinese learning, aiming to make a reflection over the issue inthis field.
