Introduction To The Choice In The Process Of Literal Translation And Free Translation In Translation

Based on my experience of translating Defense of Marriage, the thesis is going to talk about the choices of the application of the two translating methods:Literal Translation and Free Translation. There are huge differences between Chinese language and English language. How to put the native Chinese language into pure English language is a big and challenging task. Of course, translating should follow the rule of meaning, form and image as close as possible. However it depends on different situations. To flexibly use literal translation and free translation in the process of translation without breaking the rule of meaning, form and image sometimes is such a dilemma. By talking about the two methods’ options, I try to find out a proper solution in the process. Sometimes I use literal translation instead of free translation, sometimes I prefer free translation, and sometimes I would combine the two methods together for the sake of transferring the meaning as exact as possible.
