First of all, this thesis introduces the purpose of this research and the achievementsof Chinese and English idioms. Then, the thesis points out the definitions and origins ofChinese and English idioms. And then, the thesis contrasts the numbers and the degreeof replacement of the components of Chinese and English idioms, as well as some ofthe idioms can be used to express the attitudes, such as the derogatory and theapproving, which are also contrasted in the thesis. From the above contrastive analysisof Chinese and English idioms, the thesis puts forward some reasons that why thereexists the similarities and differences of Chinese and English idioms. The last part ofthis thesis applies the results of the contrastive analysis of the idioms to thedevelopments in teaching Chinese as a second language.
