Idiom plays important role in modern Chinese language. It is a difficulty of importance in the vocabulary teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. Idiom comes from the people's daily life and old Chinese history. It is the reflection of the values, history and culture, habits and customs, and social life of Han Nationality. Idiom teaching is a very important method of Chinese culture transmission and cultivation of cross-culture communication ability. Overseas students are very interesting in idiom learning, but there is biased error in the using because idiom has flexible structure and variability in semantics.Nowadays, the research of idiom is focused on noumenon and academic circles have very great dispute. There is seldom research about idiom teaching, teaching directions and teaching strategy. This thesis researches the characteristics of idiom from the etymology, semantics, pragmatics, grammar and cultural infiltration. According to the biased error theory, this thesis analyses the overseas students biased error of voice, semantics and pragmatics in idiom using. And the thesis gives some suggestion about idiom teaching.There are four parts in the thesis. The first part is introduction, which talks about the significance of idiom research and gives a brief view of the current research situation. The second part sums up the identification, etymology, semantics, pragmatics, grammar and cultural infiltration characteristic of idiom. The third part discusses the idiom in Chinese teaching to the overseas students. This part analyses the overseas students'biased error and the reason of it, which has the mother tongue negative migration, the Chinese negative migration, cultural transfer, or the improper use of learning strategies or teaching error, bases on some really examples. The forth part mentions that the idiom teaching of teaching Chinese as foreign language should abide by the principles of integrating theory with practice, combining normative teaching with epochal character, making correct analysis of a correct problem, and combining evolution with defining priority. Meanwhile, this part gives some suggestion about idiom teaching, which are helping students to build their"idiom dictionary", and paying attention to the contrastive analysis of the idiom knowledge, setting up of the language situation, the infiltration of the cultural knowledge, compiling of books and dictionaries, multi-medium teaching and idiom teaching of neologism, and so on.
