Vietnam and China have got a long lasting historical basedrelationship; Vietnamese people used to borrow Chinese characters tomake their own ones. Along with the rapid development of China’seconomy, Sino-Vietnamese relations have been further improved; thereappeared a wave of “Chinese fever” in Vietnam. Teaching Chinesecharacters to a great extent restricts the development of Chineselanguage teaching, directly influences on the result of Chineseteaching; teaching Chinese characters plays an important role inChinese language teaching.In the field of research on Chinese language teaching and learningin Vietnam, there has not been any specific study about difficulties forVietnamese students in learning Chinese characters, even only a fewabout Chinese characters learning strategies found. For usingalphabetic writings Vietnamese students, facing this maze with inabilityto find clues, many of them feel terrified. Writer bases on predecessor’sstudies, using observed and collected mispronounced characters frommy own opportunity of teaching Chinese in Vietnam for years as originalcorpus, analyses main effective factors, and those caused by Chinesecharacters themselves, teachers and learners as well to point out avariety of reasons. From surveys on college students’ writing in threecolleges in Vietnam, this paper analyses some factors affecting theiracquisition of Chinese characters and causing written errors throughfive aspects. They are:(1) difficulties of Vietnamese students inremembering Chinese characters from their experience inpsychological process to actual process;(2) differences between mainfeatures of Chinese characters and Vietnamese alphabetic writing;(3)common mistakes that Vietnamese students usually have in recognizingand remembering Chinese characters at primary level;(4) obstacles factors to Vietnamese students in recognizing and rememberingChinese characters at primary level;(5) proposing obstacles andinterferences need overcoming in learning and teaching Chinesecharacters as well as some solutions.
