Chinese calligraphy cannot do without ink technique. In the long development course of calligraphy, ink technique had always been the focus of calligraphers from the Wei and Jin Dynasties, through Tang and Song Dynasties and to Ming and Qing Dynasties. Ink technique transformed from being single and preliminary to being rich and mature. Ink technique’s status of expression technique behind forms has been consolidated and stabilized. Wang Duo is the representative and pioneer with the most mature ink technique and revolutionary thought at the juncture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. He created a peak of ink technique practice. Proceeding from traditional "five colors of ink"---black, white, wet, dry and thin, he explored and practiced various ink techniques, extended the space of calligraphy technique, enriched and improved its expressiveness, especially use of ink technique, broke off with traditional formal rules of brush use, art of composition, character composition, and formed new rhythmic form and spatial relation of tense visual impact and emotional echo. However, such change is not a subversion and separation from tradition, but an evolution and continuation, a need to fit in with characteristics of times and society and lifestyle, and a new artistic form of mental change. While making bold innovation, Wang Duo also created a new era of calligraphy art. This is both a result of his personal life opportunity and conceptual influence, but also a mark of the era and society. Today, our re-evaluation of ink technique in Wang Duo’s calligraphy works gives us deep and active implications on continuation of tradition and innovation in the current calligraphy creation.
