Quantifiers are a major feature of Chinese, due not only to the large amount of quantifiersavailable for use, but also due to the high frequency and complexity of its usage. Vietnamesealso has a grammatical category of quantifiers called "Classifiers," the features and uses ofwhich are very similar to Chinese quantifiers (for the purposes of this thesis, the Vietnamese"Classifiers" will now be referred to as Quantifier). Due to China and Vietnam’s long, closeand neighborly relationship, Vietnamese is deeply affected by Chinese and has borrowedmany words from Chinese. But, after all, Vietnamese and Chinese are two different languages.The quantification systems of the two languages have their own characteristics and differences.These differences have brought many difficulties to Vietnamese students learning the Chinesequantifiers. This thesis will explore the two languages type of quantifiers, grammar, andsemantics and make suggestions for education based on this.This thesis includes the following parts:This thesis has already collated the concept and categorized the quantifier of the twolanguages. It also compared and analyzed the classifiers between Chinese and Vietnamese byreferencing the linguists who has the representative views as well as statements. The writerpointed out the non-equivalence both in the measure and the meaning of classifiers in twolanguages.This thesis has already compared grammatical features of the two languages of quantifiers.Most of the Grammar experts are centralized in the areas of overlap, combination ability andsequence comparison. However, the writer made a thorough and accurate comparison basedon previous work and exploited the simplified structures of quantifiers which are [numeral+noun] and [quantifier+noun] both in Chinese and Vietnamese.The quantifiers both in Chinese and Vietnamese have distinguishing emotional meanings.This thesis does a constructive study both on emotional coloring and style color of the twolanguages. In this aspect, these two languages share more commonalities than differences.However, they still have some distinctions, for instance: Chinese has a clear boundarybetween written color and spoken color while this is not so in Vietnamese.This thesis has proposed some pertinent advice on the teaching of quantifiers by thecombination of collecting the errors that Vietnamese students made while learning Chinesethrough comparison. Concrete measures: to teach the quantifiers in Chinese by the sequence differences between Chinese and Vietnamese. There is no overlap in Vietnamese, so it snecessary to have specific teaching measures for quantifiers along with the teaching ofdifferent quantifier categories.This thesis reveals the contrast between Chinese and Vietnamese by contractive analysisin several steps, and also explores the commonness of the errors that the Vietnamese madewhen they use quantifiers. Hopefully this thesis can contributes both in the study and theteaching of Chinese quantifiers.
