The "magic/devil" and "Zen" are two core characteristics in Lo Fu’s poetry, which not only appears in its text style (poem), but also be in its inner spirit (thinking). When the poet exiled in a strange island in his early years, suffered from the war and separate and carried dual cultural dislocation, his heart intertwined with various negative emotions such as the pain of exile, the puzzle of self-identity, the fear of death and the pain of time, which torture Lo Fu’s young life like a devil. However, under the political pressure in Taiwan at that time, the poet couldn’t pour out their pines in the chest directly, so Lo Fu had to follow the example of Western surrealistic way of expressing the subconscious, to show his black-magic soul voice with dense poetic quality and high concentration of images. With the passage of time, Taiwan’s political pressure gradually relaxes. As each year goes by, the poet lives in stability and peace. All kinds of internal and external conflicts are less intense, so the turmoil magic factor is slowly precipitating down. However, the encounters in the early years have completely changed the life of Lo Fu, some of the pain was difficult to erase from his lifetime, they lurked in the heart and were difficult to defuse. Back to look at the East humanistic spirit and ultimately incline to Zen, this is Lo Fu’s conscious exploration of poetic art, and is also an inevitable way of seeking inner salvation. Influenced by the quality of grasping a passage without clinging to a literal interpretation of classical poetry, Lo Fu’s poems became more simple and transparent. Lo Fu found that surrealism and Zen actually has something in common. The fuse of the two is not only a combination of Western and Oriental culture, but also a connection of modern and classical poetic quality. To Lo Fu, both magic/devil and Zen are two sides of the same coin. Magic/devil has its dark mood and the passion for life; Zen has its peace meditation and lively vigor. Throughout his entire life, Lo Fu is always a poet with a strong life consciousness and the sense of responsibility on history. No matter magic/devil or Zen, it’s just a face in different social environments, ages and aesthetic pursuits. Lo Fu is a integrated person only when both magic/devil and Zen exists in his life. Lo Fu settles in Zen in his old ages, but the magic/devil still in Zen, his poem is full of life enthusiasm and lively vitality. In short, Lo Fu’s poem has significant enlightenments both in artistic exploration and spiritual connotation of modern poetry. |
