English translation and explanation in the textbooks of teachingChinese as second language is critical for some fresh internationalstudents. The paper is aimed to study the needs and satisfaction ofEnglish translation in Chinese textbooks on the basis of questionnaireand interview of international students in College of InternationalCultural Exchange, Shanghai International Studies University.IPA(Importance-performance Analysis) model is used to analyze the data.The content of questionnaire includes background of internationalstudents (age, gender, nationality, grade and English proficiency), theneed and satisfaction of translation accuracy of new words and grammar,of listing meanings’ translation of new words, of culture wordstranslation, of other language translation and of teachers’ Englishproficiency and cross-culture awareness.Through the background analysis, it is found that Japanese and Koreanstudents occupied38%of the total number of students and that thosewhose English proficiency are good and at general level account for74%of the students. The paper focuses on discussion of un-satisfactionfactors of English translation in Chinese textbooks such as culture wordstranslation and other language translation. Through model analysis by IPA,it is found that the students’ nationality and English proficiency arethe main reasons behind their studying demands. For example, Japanese andKorean students and those students whose English are not so good relyheavily on the needs of increasing other language translation.According to the data analysis, the meaningful proposes and measuresare provided to the college of International Cultural Exchange in theareas of textbooks, teaching and teachers. The culture words translationand other language translation should be added to the new wordstranslation and explanation in the Chinese textbooks. The placement tests should be conducted according to students’ Chinese and Englishproficiency. If their Chinese and English are not good, the school shouldplace them in the same class according to their nationality. This kind ofclass should be provided with the Chinese teachers who are good atstudents’ native language and the appropriate textbooks. Chineseteachers should try their best to fulfill students’ learning needswhiling teaching.
