Modern Chinese Aabb Superimposed Status Word Study

Status word is an important member of Chinese word-class system. But scholars have different perceptions for the word-class status of such word. Predecessors research status words generally regarding them being subordinate to adjectives and regarding them as overlapping adjectives because that such studies failed to fully reveal the AABB reduplication grammatical attribute. In fact, double syllable words through the overlapping in form of AABB overlapped status word commonly used in modern Chinese, which are an important part of speech in Chinese. It is a kind of cross lexical phenomenon. It is this characteristic that decides the status word’s independence of the word-class status in word class system. Besides, it proves the word-class status of AABB overlapped status word from three respects of diachronic, synchronic analysis and cognitive explanation. Research shows that in addition to its structure characteristics, the syntactic function, grammatical meaning of (AABB overlapped) status word are having substaintial distinction with other parts of speech.There are624AABB overlapped status word from 《overlapping adjectives in modern Chinese law interpretation》(1996)edited by Wang Guozhang, Wu Shuchun and the 《modern Chinese Dictionary》(Fifth Edition). According to the syntactic function, AABB overlapped status word is divided into AABB overlapped judgement status word and AABB overlapped general status word. According to the internal structure, AABB overlapped status word is divided into non-based type AABB overlapped status word and a based type AABB overlapped status word. According to the data statistics, overlapping form is the most typical structural feature of status word, and AABB overlapped status word is the most typical member of that. No matter what is the base type, there are generally four kinds of structural types of AABB overlapped status word’s internal members, including combined type, formal type, supplementary type and subject-predicate type. The combined type is the most typical member of structure types, formal type is also the structure type that members generally have, supplementary type followed, subject-predicate form is at least. The data statistics about syntactic functions of AABB overlapped status word indicate that used as predication is a basic syntactic function of AABB overlapped status word, used as adverbial is a syntactic function of AABB overlapped status word in the highest frequency of use. Used as attributive is the second to it. Used as complement is the weakest one that belongs to the non-basic syntactic function.Semantic features of AABB overlapped state word are divided into typical and atypical two categories. The quantity characteristics is the typical semantic feature of AABB overlapped status word, its untypical semantic features include depiction, limit, time and intending. According to the semantic classification, AABB overlapped status word is divided into AABB overlapped segment status word and AABB overlapped point status word. This study founds that the range is recessive and diffusing, the section and the point are dominant and curing with formal markers. Status word differs from that of nouns, verbs and adjectives, which form of "quantity" is cured, rather than diffusing, so it only has section quantity characteristics and point quantity features.
