The topic of this paper is the comparison of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara drawings, or portraits of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara, in China and Korea. Her correct name should be Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Goddess of Mercy or Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Goddess of Mercy. In Sanskrit, she is called Sahasrabhuja Avalokitasvara. As is well-known, Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara has one thousand hands with one eye in each hand. She sees through pains of all humans with her thousand eyes and helps them realize their Buddhist wishes with her thousand hands. As the basis of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara drawings, the most famous literatures are Thousand-hand Sutra and Mahavairocana Sutra. With the religion developed and graphics diversified, the Kwan-yin drawing was borrowed or combined with Chinese traditional stories to meet the requirement of the times. After its evolution and development in various forms, it became Chinese Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara drawing. According to historical records, Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara is popular most in Asia, especially in China.Due to their locations, Korea is influenced a lot by China and we can track down their relevance from both Buddhism and Buddhist drawings. Note that although Buddhism and Buddhist drawings were introduced from China to Korea, they were gradually merged with Korean local culture with time passing by, and displayed the Korean style. The arts of Buddhist drawings were very developed in Goryeo times and could represent the arts during that period. Many Buddhist paintings were drawn at that time with only one left now. After the Goryeo times, there were not too many Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara drawings in Korea. Besides modern works, there are only3drawings in Goryeo and Korea times。In China, the religion of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara experienced its peak in Tang Dynasty. After that, there came up numerous Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara drawings while Mogao Grottoes has the most. The Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara drawings in the third grotto are said to be the magnum opus in China. In Korea, there are only a few such drawings now of which those drawn in Goryeo times are comparable with those in Mogao Grottoes. Although the period of Goryeo Dynasty is almost the same as that of Yuan, they shared no other similarities except that they all drew Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara paintings, which shows a difference in the development history of Thousand-hand Kwan-yin religion between China and Korea.
