Drawing, as a foreign painting method entering China late in its history, has greatly influenced Chinese painting. Although appearing simple, the objective representative tradition of Western painting not only influenced great changes in Chinese oil painting, but also has had a positive influence on the development of Chinese ink painting. In the realm of contemporary Chinese ink figure painting, the study and use of Western representative methods has been developed beautifully. This text will first analyze the precepts of Western drawing while synthesizing traditional concepts of ink in Chinese painting in order to discover commonalities between the Eastern and Western art paradigms. Secondly, this text will list several representative painters from the Ming, Qing, and contemporary eras that used Western drawing methods. Discussion of such a representative language from both macrocosmic and microcosmic perspectives has become a necessary contributing factor in the development of contemporary Chinese ink painting. The text concludes with a description of the vigorous work that figure painters have pursued within the contemporary context. |
