The selection and arrangement of grammar items are essential to Chinese textbooks, but there is a serious lack of research in this aspect. With the help of Guidelines for CLT Materials Development, this paper takes Road to Success, New Concept Chinese and HSK Standard Course as the study objects and uses Grammatical Items of International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education as a criterion to investigate the selection and arrangement of grammar items. This thesis tries to find out the shortcomings of selection and analysis the characteristics of arrangement, and then summarizes the deficiencies of Chinese textbooks in the primary stage. So some reasonable suggestions on compiling the selection and arrangement of grammar items will be put forward. At the same time, it’s our further purpose to deepen teaching grammar research, optimize elementary textbooks compilation and finally promote Chinese textbooks study.This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter one mainly introduces features of modern Chinese grammar, difficulties in learning and characteristics of teaching grammar. Chapter two is a theoretical foundation which emphasises on academic basis and principles of the paper. Chapter three is a research on the selection of grammar items. The first section elaborates the selection of grammar items from three aspects which are rank distribution, cumulative rank distribution and incorporated proportions of Grammatical Items. Then the second section puts forward some suggestions according to analysis results. Chapter four is a research on the arrangement of grammar items. It firstly discusses quantity controlling and difficulty distribution of Chinese textbooks. Among them, quantity controlling involves the total amount, the content of grammar items and the amount to teach in each class. Difficulty distribution involves extra-elementary grammar items, unranked items and controversial items. Then it also makes suggestions based on analysis results. The conclusion summarizes the viewpoints of the thesis and deepens the theme. On the basis of Chinese textbooks study, this paper offers proposals to improve Chinese grammar teaching and points out the weak points.
