"the Chinese Mandarin Grammar" Grammar Study

Grammar of the Mandarin Language is a comprehensive grammar book, whichhelps the missionaries study the mandarin language. This thesis takes the grammarpart in this book as the study subject, induction and comparative method anddiachrony description as research method.The purposes of this research sum up in4points：firstly，to analyze the views ofVaro about Chinese Language and morphology and syntax,；secondly，to illustratehow does Varo model after the Ancient Greece-Latin traditional grammar in details；；thirdly，to summarize the Varo’s research result based on the true characteristic ofChinese Language；fourthly，to find out the reason of the unreasonable points aboutChinese Grammar.The main Innovative Points of this thesis includes the following parts:Firstly,we sum up the view of Varo about Chinese parts of speech and the way inwhich Varo divide the parts of speech of Chinese.Secondly,According to the development track of the Ancient Greece-Latinsystem of parts of speech,this thesis proves that Adjective can’t be a part of Varo’sChinese word-class system, and draw a conclusion that the author divided Chinesevocabulary into nine categories.Thirdly,we analyze the “xiao ci”in Grammar of the Mandarin Language,andcome to the conclusion that the “xiao ci” exact as highlighting tags to show thesemantics and pragmatic function of the high-frequency vocabulary.
