The coalition government, which is rare in the history of British party politics, formed by the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats came to power underthe leadership of Cameron in May2010.The thesis is supposed to analyse thespecific performances and causes of the coalition government’s policy towards EUby exploring the characteristics of the coalition government itself and to predicts thefurther tendency of Cameron Administration’s policy towards EU based on thesummary of these characteristics.Amid the international financial crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis, the Cameron coalition government has adjusted its policy towards EU to make itpositive but reserved. First, Despite of the effort to strengthen the commercialinteraction between financial deficit as well as protesting against imposing economicsupervision. Second, Britain implemented a policy of positive coordinations andintense cooperations with major European countries on the issue of Libya, whichfurther tightened both sides’ relation, but the policy which was carried on undereither bilateral or multilateral frameworks, did not match well with EU’s commondiplomatic and defense policy. Third, Cameron administration’s policy towards EUshowed certain flexibility, such as continuous broadening its engagement with EU,its declaration to answer global challenges and to keep common competitivenesswith EU, concerning on the integration process of EU and supporting EU expansion, especially the expansion to Turkey, but British policy towards EU still has not riddedBritain from the skepticism to EU, which usually makes Britain adopt a ‘isolated’status on key issues. To summarize, to some extent, Britain-UK relation has beenimproved in the Cameron coalition administration, but contradictions still exist. Theimprovement of Britain-EU relation results from the deepening understanding fromthe two parties of the coalition government, as well as the demand of Britain’spractical interests. On the contrary, the contradictions between Britain and EU comesfrom the political tradition of the skepticism to EU existing in the Conservative Partyof Britain, as well as Britain’s great concern for its own interests against the backdrop of the global financial crisis and European Debt crisis.Cameron coalition administration will continue to adopt its reserved positive policytowards EU in the future. In the aspect of economy, the coalition government willcontinue to keep its economic relation with indebted countries and strengthen itscommercial relation with each European country for its long-term benefit, so as tohalt the spread of sovereign debt crisis and stimulate the resurgence of the nation’seconomy. But Britain will keep staying out of the crisis and advocate the indebtednations should solve the crisis by themselves, because it still holds pessimisticopinion on European economy and Euro zone and refuse to strengthen financialsupervision within EU. In the aspect of politics, however, bilateral or multilateralcooperation and coordination will be strengthened between the coalition governmentand some major European countries. For example, Britain has tightened the militarycooperation with France and kept changing views with relevant European countries. But these cooperations might not be carried on within the framework of EU becausethe coalition government will not do much on promotion of common diplomacy andcommon defence within EU. In the aspect of the construction of EU, Britain tries tobe a positive member, who concerns the integration process of EU and supports theexpansion of EU, but the Britain-EU relation has a lot to do with their balance ofpower as well as some other factors. In all, the general Britain-EU relation will notbe greatly affected for their divergence on local issues, but both sides will be morepractical and rational in the coming game. After all, Britain and EU have been toomuch connected by their historical and realistic interests and their inter-dependencywith each other on many issues. Therefore, the Britain-EU relation will maintain thepresent status and stably progress forwards, with only low possibility of wide rangedfluctuation.
