The Ladies’Journal, for the female as the main readers, was started publicationby Shanghai Commercial Press in 1915. Up to January, 1932, it has brought aprofound impact on the society for its long-time issue, wide distribution areas, themass-circulation, the readership and its social influence during the 17 years. TheLadies’Journal, which was published and distributed during New CultureMovement and May Fourth Movement, reflects the national ideology at that timeand the revolution and social change. It also offers later scholars a referencetemplate of women’s movement with its constantly updated content.Wang Yunzhang, Hu Binxia, Zhang Xichen, Du Jiutian, Ye Shengtao and YangRunyu successively served as editor in chief of the journal. Previous scholars devotemore attention to Zhang Xichen period, which is always regarded as a sign of thetimes of modern Chinese women narrative. The journal content about the impact ofRadicalism during May Fourth Movement founded New Culture Movement. Thejournal is considered as a relatively conservative and continuous magazine in othertimes. The theme has been keeping its conservative side during other editors in chiefperiods especially Du Jiutian.The specific content of The Ladies’Journal and the contact with the times duringDu period is ignored by most researchers. So the study on the journal at that time andDu is seldom. Zhang considers that Du’s style is outdated and should be eliminated .That is, Du period made the theme more conservative. Moreover, adopting Zhang’sevaluation to Du, previous researchers usually keep a contemporary perspective butignore the times, the social background and the progressive significance of the journal.Then their conclusions contain one-sided view and conservative arguments.On the basis of the continuous development context of the journal, the studytakes the formation of female independent consciousness during Du period as thebreakthrough point. The paper deeply researches the magazine form and women’smarriage and family, education and knowledge, health and medical at that time. The author attempts to illustrate that Du period is the landmark in the development of TheLadies’Journal. In this period, the radical revolutionary rhetoric which ismale-centered in magazine has been gradually changed. Meanwhile, women started toparticipate in rethinking their own life. Therefore, women’s attention to their familyand daily life has brought positive impact on the formation of independentconsciousness.
