Marx’s theory of civil society is a complex system, and it has gone through each stage of the changeable social history. The retrospection of origin of Marx’s thoughts contributes to grasp the essence of Marx’s theory of civil society. The source of Marx’s ideology about civil society can be divided into two stages including classical civil society and the modern civil society. Aristotle and Cicero are typical representatives in the period of classical civil society. Aristotle thought that civil society is a representative of the political community and ethical community, and Cicero also defined the participation in political life as the essence of the human and regarded the standards of "justice" and "rationality" based on the natural law as the foundations and fundamental principles of civil society. In the modern classical civil society period, the thinkers represented by Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Hegel began to regard the civil society theory as a weapon to achieve freedom rights and fight against the feudal autocratic system. Hegel even successfully made the correct abstract of civil society from the interrelationships of the human in the society of market economy.Marx, critically inheriting the previous scholars’achievements especially Hegel’s thought, gradually formed and perfected his own civil society theory. Marx’s discussion about the concept of civil society can mainly be divided into two aspects: One is a general concept of civil society, considering citizens’society as a private benefit-based relation that differs from public realm or universal benefit, private realm, nonofficial society organization, national political life outside of social activities, etc.; The other is a substantial concept of civil society, summarizing citizen’s society as a form of material communication. On top of that, this thesis studies internal structure and operational mechanism of the civil society from the foundation of citizen’s society for existence and growth, the important guarantee means and the conditions of the formation of democracy mechanism. Marx’s theory of civil society not only made great contribution for the foundation of historical materialism, but also made huge effects in pushing market economy and democracy and developing the binary separation of citizen society and political nation. Meanwhile, it also had great significance in accelerating economy, politics, culture and social development in China and the whole world.Since the reform, the economic and social construction of our country has attracted the world-wide attention. The work of guaranteeing and improving people’s livelihood has also made huge progress. However, under the international background of globalization, informatization and urbanization, our country also continuously face such new problems and challenges as the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, the continuously changeable population structure and the unavoidable changes of people’s thought, etc., which makes higher request towards the social management in our country. Marx’s Theory of Civil Society, a true birthland and stage of the whole history, has made great influence on the establishment of the law, system and functions of the social management in China. It plays an important role in clarifying the legislation bases, innovating the styles of legal construction and improving the system. Moreover, it theoretically supports the social transformation of a multiple administration mode from the traditional centralized management by the government and raises the governmental management ability and the social self-government.
