During the Anti-Japanese war, the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region was theseat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the general resistancestrategy rear for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In the meantime, in order tomobilize people to participate in the war, and to improve people’s low-literacy, theCCP set off a vigorous social education movement in the border region. Under theguidance of the principle of combining education and production, considering withthe reality in the border region and needs of the people there, the CCP and theShaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Government (BRG) formulated a series ofsocial education policies and systems. They encouraged the general public toparticipate in social education through rich content and diverse forms. Socialeducation had made remarkable achievements. It not only consolidated the CCP’sregime in the border region, and inspired people to support the war. It also enhancedpeople’s literacy, and improved the countenance of the border region. In the process ofcarrying out social education work in the border region, the CCP and the BRG hadaccumulated a lot of valuable experience.After the founding of new China, our country has made great progress in education.However, the development of our country’s social education has not kept up with thepace of the development of the entire education. At present, there are many problemsin the development of our country’s social education. As a successful example, thesocial education in Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region can provide beneficialexperience for the current social education.This paper made an in-depth investigation of the social education in theShaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region during the Anti-Japanese war by collectingmaterial and reading literature. It is divided into three parts. The first part detailed thewhole picture of the social education in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region,including the background of its spring-up, the carrying-out guidelines, policies,systems, contents and forms, the tremendous achievements it made. The second partsummarized the experience and deficiency of the CCP and the BRG in carrying outsocial education work in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. The third partdiscussed the enlightenment of the social education in the Shaanxi-Gansu-NingxiaBorder Region combining the current situation of our country’s social education.
