A Study On Political Character Of Chinese Traditonal Scholars

Scholar’s political character, in essence, was the comprehensive expression of their political attitude, political values, political belief and political responsibility, etc. In the academic studies, although the study of Chinese traditional scholars attracted many eyes in all kinds of areas, the research of scholar’s political character did not arouse enough attention from tire researchers, so there are a few special masters on this subject. In this dissertation based on the previous scholarship, the author chooses political spirit as the specific angle of the study of scholars, which gives the dissertation some new meaning.This paper mainly analysis and proves the views as follows:First, on the political attitude aspect, scholars sincerely believed the Confucianism, which was served as the official ideology; they were extremely loyal to the monarchy; in the actual political operation process, they strongly praised the clear and bright politics and criticize the murky and corrupt politics. Second, from the perspective of political values, scholars always abided by the basic Confucian values, such as loyalty, filial piety, human-heartedness, virtue, righteousness, propriety, etc. Their biggest life ideal was to be a man of nobility and integrity. Third, for the aspect of political belief, the Confucianism system, the sage and the five classics constituted the core of their political beliefs. Fourth, at the political responsibility level, it was a universal phenomenon that a man of noble aspiration would think it was his duty to serve people worldwide. They expected to be appreciated by the emperor and realize their ideal of maintaining the state rightly and making all peaceful. In their ideas, to be an honest and upright official was always their important life ambition. Fifth, the scholars’political character in general had three main orientation, including the political psychology of being slaves, the prominence of the authoritarian personality and the patency of the government-owned standard consciousness. This kind of character had eras’own characteristics and historical limitations; however, it still survives in modern society in one form or another, and exerts great influence on people’s thoughts and behavior. Therefore, it is important for us to promote the modernized transformation of the scholar’s political character.In the methodology, the thesis mainly lessons from the political culture theory in the research of modern politics. at the same time, this thesis also draws lessons from and absorbs related theories and concepts from psychology. In the concrete analysis of the related topics, the thesis mainly uses the methods of documents research, case study and comparative study.
