In the framework of Asymmetric alliance, the internal adjustment of thealliance on the rights or benefits of the two sides was usually led dominated bybigger power. According to the alliance theory, especially research on theadjustment of alliances, the majorfactors are institutional framework, comparison of strength, domestic political elements. However, there isnecessary to test if the theory is applicable for binary asymmetric alliances.Theresearch object in this paper, i.e. the US-Japan alliance, has experienced lots ofadjustments since the end of World War II.Most of the adjustments happened inthe alliance were led by the U.S., but based on historical facts, in the process ofadjusting the US-Japan alliance, the relatively less powerful country, Japan alsocame up with some internal adjustment’s requests about the alliance to theUnited States for several times. In these cases, both successful ones and failedones are included. Thus, I have the interest about the facts that generated thedifferent outcomes. In this paper, through elaborate analysis of three caseof Japan IchiroHatoyamaCabinet and Kishi Cabinet which came up with alliance adjustmentrequests to the United States,I found that the stability of the Japanese Cabinethas played an important role in the case whether Japan Cabinet can achieve itsgoal on Japan-US alliance adjustment. The cabinet stability in this paper isanalyzed from following four dimensions, namely the cabinet duration, theruling party’s share seats in Parliament, Prime Minister’s ability to control theruling party, the relationship status between cabinet government and thealliance-led country. We compared cases happened in the two cabinet in thesedimensions, theresult that two cabinet showed significant differences, and alsohad direct and tangible effects on the dependent variable in this paper. Perhaps, the view which I put forward is not the only factor that affects the internaladjustment of alliances; However, in the cases analyzed, it played a fairlyimportant role.
