Young people’s language use and attitude toward language are the key to maintaining a language. In a survey among youth groups in regards to the use and attitude toward Mandarin and dialects of urban language, it is found that many cities have already developed, though research on this matter in Nanjing is difficult to find. A questionnaire done in Nanjing City junior high school to determine high school students’ language use, language skills, language environment and language attitudes on first-hand data, analyzes data using SPSS software, combined with research of other scholars on other cities using similar surveys to compare the linguistic situation of groups of students, summed up the characteristics of Nanjing city high school students’ language use and attitudes toward language. At the same time, the writer randomly observed focus group interviews using a secondary method to determine Nanjing city high school students’ language use and language attitudes of some specific issues, in order to do an in-depth study.Through investigation and analysis, this discussion concluding that most teenagers in other large cities are the same, Nanjing city high school students can generally use both Mandarin and the Nanjing dialect, Mandarin being dominant in verbal communication. Compared to other cities such as Shanghai and Changzhou, Nanjing city high school students’language use and language attitude reflect certain characteristics; these characteristics resemble the pattern of "words" used in Nanjing, resulting in future development of the Nanjing dialect and Mandarin long-term harmonious co-existence, in order to meet the development of services in Nanjing and the publics’ communication needs. Finally, the paper recommends that the department should seek the protection of the regional dialect simultaneously with commencing in deepening the promotion of Mandarin, under the proper guidance of Nanjing, the public, especially young peoples’ use of the language of civilization, to create a harmonious language environment. The writer also gave some advice to actively appeal to young audiences using the mass media, to give positive guidance to enhance the identity of their mother tongue, and to eliminate the spread of an uncivil language phenomenon. Parents should create a harmonious language environment for their children and students to develop respect and a sense of identity through the dialect, in order to lay a good foundation for the future and to meet the important task of excellent traditions of Chinese culture, and establish a foundation for common harmonious language.
