The teaching of classical Chinese has always been an important and difficult point of the Chinese teaching in middle school, with its significance in improving students’ ability to read and appreciate classical Chinese as well as their humanistic literacy, aesthetic sense and writing skills. The ancient biographical prose is an important part of classical Chinese works in the textbooks, and many of them were written by famous litterateurs in history and of great historiographical and literary value. Research on ancient biographical prose and its current teaching situation can help sum up beneficial experience and review problems in teaching classical Chinese for a further explanation in the reform of classical Chinese teaching.This paper discusses the teaching of ancient biographical prose in4chapters. Chapter One begins with the origin of ancient biographical prose and explains the writing purposes and meanings through document study. A classification of research objects and review of its development demonstrate the effect characteristics of different times have on those works. Chapter Two analyzes the stylistic features and unique value of ancient biographical prose. Character-oriented, ancient biographical prose illustrates the whole history and has an important position in ancient prose with its unique style and aesthetic orientation. This paper analyzes the historiographical value of these works and the educational significance for students in the two aspects of how ancient biographical prose helps form students’historical consciousness and how much they can learn from history. Chapter Three gives a form of the ancient biographical prose selected as passages in widely-used versions of textbooks and makes a comparison of the selecting, excerpting and exercises of the passages. The comparison of their advantages and disadvantages and the appropriateness of the excerpting can provide editors with reference as well as help teachers in teaching classical Chinese. This chapter also has a review on the educational function of ancient biographical prose in the background of new curriculum reform from three different aspects:the development of students’humanistic literacy, aesthetic education and writing ability. Chapter Four gives an in-depth insight into the current teaching situation of ancient biographical prose with results of a questionnaire survey and sums up the college entrance examination paper’s effect on the teaching of related passages and a form of the classical Chinese passages in the papers of high school entrance exams and college entrance exams in the latest10years. Rational suggestions for the teaching of ancient biographical prose are given on the basis of a objective analysis of questionnaires.
