As a part of English teaching, reading teaching plays an important role in it. Readingcomprehension can check students’ ability of using language. And reading comprehension is alsoan important part of regular test and university entrance examination. However, with the influenceof traditional teaching concept and examination-oriented education, most of teachers give moreimportance to words、grammar and translation than to culture background knowledge. If studentsdon’t have enough culture knowledge in their brains, they can not get real meaning of article andthe authors’ real intention, which will affect the improvement of reading comprehension ability.With the development of English teaching reform, English teachers have realized the importance ofculture, but the culture teaching is not still good enough on the effect of many factors. And culturebackground knowledge is still barrier of reading comprehension. Therefore, the investigation intothe actualities in culture teaching will be beneficial to improve teachers’ reading teaching andstudents’ reading abilities.This study chose70teachers from3middle schools in Weishan County, Jining City andanother middle school in Zaozhuang City. The date is collected from questionnaire、interview andclassroom observation. This study will focus on the actualities in culture teaching to solve thefollowing three questions:(1) What’s the problems in culture teaching;(2) What factors attribute tothe problems;(3) How to solve these problems.The major findings are:(1) Problems in culture teaching: the teachers don’t change the role inteaching; teaching methods are simple; the teachers don’t use students’ spare time; culture is notincluded in the exams.(2) Factors attribute to the problems in culture teaching:examination-oriented education; students; teachers; evaluation mode.(3) According to the resultsof research, this study will try to give some suggestions to solve these problems:changing thetraditional teaching concept; using various teaching methods and creating cultural atmosphere;using students’ spare time to design activities; guiding students’ extracurricular reading; addingcultural exam in English test.
