The development of knowledge economy needs improvement from high-quality talents. Universities bear the responsibility of cultivating talents whom the development of social economy and technology depends on. Since it carried out expanding the scale of enrolment for higher education in1999, employment for undergraduate had been rising more and more attention from the public. As a matter of fact, employment has direct relationship with major setting. As major is basic unit for cultivating talents and underground for cultivating mode change in universities, then how to meet the demand of social needs for different talents? How to guarantee higher education quality with major setting adjustment? What kind of factors will prevent or push major setting? In order to solve these problems, it is vital to study major setting.This thesis starts from current situation of major setting in universities, makes an analysis for problems and factors it facing on the basis of exposition on major setting definition, history background and current situation analysis. I choose major setting in America as comparison with the aim of putting forward feasible strategy.I point put some problems existing in major setting in domestic universities, which are three conflicts between major setting and social need, major setting mode and talents cultivation, the right of major setting and university’s autonomy. Through analyzing these conflicts, I point out several factors affecting major setting, which mainly are government, market and university. Only if we could handle these three factors, can we solve major setting finally.Then, there are two parts. The first part is about solutions for major setting from government society、market and university. On the view of macroscopic, to analyze methods of government controlling major setting, I give suggestions that government should leave more right to university; while microscopically, universities are the decider whom should carry out carefully research on management system. I put forward some suggestion to improve their autonomy. While at the some time,I also emphasize the third party which is society and market. According to conflicts and factors mentioned above, I provide some feasible suggestions. I talk about situation of major setting in America, analyze different understanding of "major" in American universities, conclude their major setting mode for undergraduate, summarize their major setting features, like meeting the needs of the society, emphasizing basic theory and flexibility of major setting system which has helpful reference for talents cultivating in our country. At the end of this chapter, I emphasize the effect of American government whom gives American universities the right of autonomy to run school and set major, paving the way for the following passage. The second part predicts the trend of major setting in our country and tells that the construction of major setting will develop well.It is necessary to emphasize that we should connect problems with reality in our country to solve major setting matters. What we pursue is dynamic balance in major setting which demands to treat relationship among government、society and universities. Besides, it is encouraged to bring initiative into play for universities. And it is never simply to do what the government asks or set major as the market leads. Therefore, I emphasize many times in this thesis to set an optimum major setting system, which should base on higher education rule’s regulation、communicate all factors and finally lead development of economy、technology and culture.
