Throughout history, many great thinkers had used their creativity and imagination tochange the world. Creativity was a keen manifestation of mankind. It was the continuouspower of social development. Education held the special mission in terms of cultivatingcreative spirit talents. Nowadays the education reform had focused on quality-orientededucation which was emphasized on cultivating creative spirit and practical ability.Classroom teaching was the main position for cultivating students’creative spirit andpractical ability. In the process of completely implementing quality-oriented education, inorder to meet the challenge in the era of knowledge based economy, it was necessary toresearch how to cultivate high school students’creative consciousness, creative spirit andcreative thinking ability in the field of basic education. The young people are the main forcefor the national construction in future. So the cultivation of their creative thinking ability wasan important thing for the development of our country.With the coming of theory on New Curriculum, English classroom teaching was atwo-sided activity which included teacher’s organization、leading、participation and student’sindependence、cooperation、exploration. The most important thing was teacher’s leading thatwas achieved by teacher’s questioning. Besides, Questioning was the most importantlanguage activity for teacher and was the most crucial part in all of teacher’s teaching ability,even was the embodiment of teaching level. Open questioning was one type of classroomquestioning and was also advocated in nowadays English teaching. Open questioning wasquestions which have no fixed、unchangeable answers. While students were answering these questions, they could choose answers according to their understanding or their knowing aboutthe actual situation. In the process of teaching activities, through using open questioningflexibly, students’creative thinking ability could be sufficiently stimulated. In order to satisfyvarious needs of students, teacher should encourage students to answer according to thedifference of their thinking. It was helpful for students to open minds and to develop creativethinking and intelligence, even to cultivate creative thinking ability while learning knowledge.Open questioning could enlighten students’creative thinking. Through organizing andcontrolling open questions, teacher not only completed the teaching task, but also stimulatedstudents’creative thinking ability.The thesis analyzed the characteristics of open questioning and the creative thinkingability of senior grade students according to the theories of open questioning and creativethinking. On the base of practical explorations, the writer researched for improving the seniorgrade students’creative thinking ability by using the teaching mode of open questioning. Thisthesis emphasized on the study about the method which could develop students’thinkingability of creativity by using open questioning. In this paper, the writer chose 96 students,which were divided into two classes---the experimental and control class. All of them camefrom senior grade one in Yangquan No 3 middle school. The writer taught the experimentalclass through open questioning-based English teaching, while in the control class teacher wasstill using traditional English teaching method. The whole experimental process was lasted for17 weeks. The experimental data was collected from two tests, one of which was DiagnoseTable on Creative Thinking Ability edited by Zheng Richang. Another was Test on CreativeAttitude edited by Qian Gaoyuan. Through analyzing the data of pretest and posttest fromSPSS13.0, it was proved that the students’creative thinking ability in experimental class wasobviously improved. The results of the study showed that open questioning teaching exertedsome effects on improving students’creative thinking ability. Last but not least, there areconclusions in the final part of this thesis. In this paper, the writer also made somesuggestions on how to nurture student’s creative thinking ability by using open questioning.In the researching process of English teaching, there were still some fields which wereunknown for us. So we should continue learning in future.
