National defense education has been an educational phenomenon ever since the ancient times. It emerged accompanying the generation of a country and has been stretching through the5,000-year-civilization-history of human beings. In China, the national defense education had undergone ups and downs, however, the reform and opening policy has started a new era for it. National defense education in schools is the basis for universal national defense education, and is core of the implementation of quality education. With the deepening of the national defense education reform, many problems have continuously arisen, which requires us to reflect and to innovate so as to improve the overall quality of national defense education in colleges and universities.In view of the prominent issues existing in current national defense education, the relevant state departments, universities, academic circles have carried on a large amount of research and reflection. In theory, they constantly sum up experience and explore new thought of reform. In practice, bold reforms have been carried out. In accordance with our army’s new military change, many new initiatives have been taken for national defense education in colleges and universities, but also some new problems have been found out. In this paper, the author briefly summarizes the current domestic and foreign research about national defense education in colleges and universities, and analyzes its significance on national defense cause, national spirit, the cultivation of college students’ quality and the development of academies themselves. Then, several existing problems are analyzed and collated, such as,inaccurate understanding of the guiding ideology, unscientific mechanism of organization and leadership, incomprehensive teaching content, routine method,and lack of specificity.Aiming at these problems, firstly, this paper proposes to rectify the understanding deviation of guiding ideology, that is, the prime function of national defense education in academies is to serve the national defense. On this basis, full attention should be paid on its role in improving the comprehensive quality of college students. Patriotism education should be defined as soul of the national defense education in Colleges and universities. National defense education needs to be an important component of campus study, which definitely will exert positive influence on the formation of a good school ethos. Secondly we must deepen the reform of organization and leadership system, clearly defining the responsibilities, strengthening the guarantee and establishing scientific evaluation system. We should also strengthen the construction of teaching staff, and build multi-channel training mechanisms.Thirdly, the content of national defense education training is to be systematically integrated and constantly enriched in three aspects:skill training, theory teaching, idea inputting. Finally, great efforts should be taken to improve training methods, where the academies and the troops, training and teaching, the first class and the second or third class combine.Based on the reference of extensive literature of theoretical circles, this paper puts forward many valued creative views, such as in guiding ideology, service purpose and education content of national defense education in colleges and universities. The author believes that, the innovation as well as the systematic analysis of problems and countermeasures, has certain reference value for improving the quality level of current national defense education in academies.
