According to the domestic and foreign literature, western research about fertility desire studies on developed countries. The theories derived from the researches do not comply with the conditions in developing countries. In China, the current research results mostly concentrated on economically developed regions while ignoring less developed regions. The research subjects focus on the fertility desire of individual character groups, while paying little attention to married people born in the1980s. Therefore, the essay chooses the1980s married people in less developed city-Baotou-to study as major subjectives.Chapter2studies on the theoretical base of fertility desire. The author introduces China’s traditional childbearing perception and modern fertility theory, ideal selective theory and the theory of demographic transition. The author also takes these three theories as the support of the empirical research on fertility desire.Chapter3concludes and analyses the survey data, which tells that married group born in the1980s in Baotou city are experiencing a transition period from traditional fertility desire to modern one. Their fertility desire has a dual nature, reflecting more subject consciousness. The desired childbearing number is decreasing, but the desire to have a second child is strong. The childbearing purpose is more and more emotional. The idea that values boys only is no longer deep-rooted in people’s mind, though it still remains in some sense.Chapter4Based on the general fertility desire of married group born in the1980s in Baotou city, the author further concludes the elements impacting fertility desire from the aspect of individual, family, society and policy.Chapter5forecasts the development trend of the population in Baotou on the basis of the fertility desire of married people born in the1980s. The author believes that against the current context, the number of population will be increasing, with more and more family welcoming a second child. The gender proportion will be balanced under the only child policy, but it will be imbalanced if it is allowed to give birth to a second child. The aging issues can be relieved to some extent. Combining with current childbearing policy and population’s development trend in Baotou, the author tries to put forward feasible suggestions to formulate more reasonable policies.Chapter6provides reference to formulate population policies to coordinate the development among people, economy and environment, to better solve the current population issues and to take actions in advance to prevent the possible population crisis.
