Open class, which is Chinese endemic, is a way to do teaching research in elementary and secondary schools. It is noticed that the types of open class have been changed a lot in recent years. At the beginning, open class was just for demonstrating to the students in normal universities. But now, it becomes a dependency of teacher-appraisals and teaching competitions. As a mere formality, the teachers’fear and the cause of students transformation, open class, far from witnessing teachers’ development, has instead gone in the opposite direction. Its deviation from the original value receives more and more blame. Based on such background, studying deeply on types of open class with the purpose of teaching improvement is of practical significance. This thesis adopts documentary analysis method, extracting four types of open class from historical documents, teaching cases and teachers’biographies. The types of open class include demonstration class, research-discussion class, appraisal class and competition class. On the basis of historical analysis, this thesis reviews the diachronic changes of every type of open class, lays its stress on their practice patterns or procedures, and analyses their essential features and effects. To solve the problems created by the changing of open class, this thesis traces back to its subjective and objective reasons. Moreover, the revised value proposition of open class is discussed, whether to keep it, what to emphasize and how to take advantage of it to facilitate teacher’s development including.
