With the rapid development of computer technology, networktechnology and mobile terminals, digital learning such as Game-basedLearning, Mobile Learning are getting broad attention among theeducators. Serious games, which is used for purposes other than mereentertainment, have been applied to a broad spectrum of applicationareas like military, government, educational, corporate, healthcarearound the world in recent years. This thesis aimed at the design anddevelopment of serious games. Focusing on this purpose, this researchfulfilled the following tasks:Firstly, the thesis discusses the different definitions and perspectiveson the concept of serious games, and then have a brief discussion onserious games and related concepts and some of the markets suchgames are used in.Secondly, the thesis discusses the basic elements of the gamesystem based on the analysis of human activity system proposed inActivity Theory, and then proposed some design strategies, generalprinciples and a development process model for the design anddevelopment of serious games based on Flow Theory and John KellersARCS Model of Motivation for people interested in designing anddeveloping serious games.Thirdly, based on the general design principals and thedevelopment process model of serious games design anddevelopment, I designed and developed a serious game named “Getthe Job” for the fresh graduates by Thinking Worlds, a development toolused to develop first or third person3D games and environments. Andthe effects of application is analyzed.Finally, the thesis sums up the main research contents and thedeficiencies in the research, and then points out the future research directions.
