Algebra, part of math in Junior high school, is not only the focus ofteaching but also an effective way for students to train their thinkingability. The knowledge structure of algebra from the Grade Six to GradeNine increases. The purposes of learning math, especial learning thenotation in math, are to help students simplify the difficulties and speedup the training process of their thinking ability.Learning math can alsohelp students to improve their abstract thought, image thought andtheir ability of expressing themselves in correct words as well as theself-learning ability. But in daily teaching, I find that the abstractness ofmath’s especially the correct understanding of plenty of mathematicalnotations prevents most of the students from achieving the correctnessin understanding. Abstract mathematical notations look alike, but thedifferent combinations show the different meanings, which leads thedifficulties to the students’ understanding. In order to improve theirabilities of catching the correct meanings of the different symbols inmath and offer more effective teaching strategies, I did someresearches on this topic.This research adopted the method of analyzing quantity andquality. Based on my own teaching experience, I made a questionnaireon students math learning and drew a table about the students’understanding of mathematical notation in order to get a clear idea ofstudents’ real understanding and responding in learning.According tothe collection of data, I found students often made mistakes in theperiod of achieving the proper understanding of math ematicalnotation. After analyzing the common mistakes made by students, Imade some teaching strategies detailedly:(1)Pay more attention to common formula (Helping students toachieve the basic cognition by memorizing the basic formula) (2)Pay more attention to construct the network of knowledge(Helping students to achieve the correction and combination ofknowledge with the help of the pictures describing the structures ofdifferent conception).(3)Pay more attention to the training of difficult questions.(Thebasic functionof learning math is to solve problems. We should enable students towork out all kinds problems after doing a series of training.)(4) Pay more attention to set a file about the mistakes studentsmade.(It canreduce the problems of mathematical notation on theunderstanding and enhance students’ confidence by collecting themistakes.)(5) Pay more attention to let students make subject bythemselves.(In the period of revision, we can judge the depth andwidth of students’ understanding on mathematical notation accordingto what they have learned and understood)Enabling students to improve their understanding of mathematicalnotation is themain target of math teaching in Junior High School. To each mathteacher, it’s our responsibility to improve each student’s ability. It playsan important math ematical notation in the development of matheducation. First, it enables students to experience the beauty of math.Second, it helps to improve students’ analytical ability. Third, the correctunderstanding of mathematical notation is also helpful to thedevelopment of each others. Last, if provides teachers with the supportsof effective teaching.
