Incentive is one of the most important functions of compensation. Compensationincentive is a way to use remuneration policies to motivate staff enthusiasm andimprove production efficiency. The traditional compensation incentive is centered ondistribution system which uses competitive salary and material benefits to attract andmotivate staff. With a gradual change from the traditional compensation view to thetotal compensation view, promotion opportunity, development opportunities and otherintrinsic compensations have attracted more and more attention. The moderncompensation incentive research is no longer limited to distribution system, butextends to promotion, training and other management systems. How to reasonably usethese systems to develop incentive effects of extrinsic and intrinsic compensations isthe focus of designing a compensation incentive mechanism.College teachers are the core power to push forward the development of highereducation. The stability and development of college teacher team depends on a soundcollege compensation incentive mechanism. According to Total Compensation Theoryand the Ministry of Education’s requirement of deepening the reform of personnelsystem in colleges and universities, it has been an inevitable trend to construct acollege compensation incentive mechanism with distribution incentive as the core,rewards incentive, promotion incentive, training incentive, participation incentive andenvironment incentive as major components.This paper chose a local teaching-oriented college——Yancheng TeachersCollege as the object of case study, through conducting a questionnaire investigationand teacher interviews on the status of its compensation incentive mechanism,analyzed the incentive effects and major defects of the current compensation incentivesystem. Aimed at these defects, combining incentive theory, wage theory and thefeatures of local teaching-oriented colleges’ compensation incentive, someimprovements were proposed. This paper was expected to give suggestions to theperformance wage reform of Yancheng Teachers College, offer reference to similarcolleges’ construction of compensation incentive mechanism, and call attention ofmore universities and colleges on the compensation incentive issue.
