Many of Cai Yuanpei’s friends and students describe him as a all-embracing man, and he is indeed a generous person in the society of complex human relationship. He is easy to accept friends’suggentions when process and decide some important matters. However, as unversity president, Cai Yuanpei has lots of difficulties. He must deal with complex relationship. In general, Cai Yuanpei does not lose his pure qualities as scholar both in education and politics. Most of Cai Yuanpei’s friends in his early years are classmates from his hometown. After he severed as the president of peking university, he was able to build extensive interpersonal trust in new group of intellectuals. He connected the culture of two generations. Scholars around him, on the one hand, have effect on him, on the other hand, inspired by Cai Yuanpei, many scholars moved into peking university, which produced important effect on the development of peking university as well as some bad effects, such as factional fighting.The first chapter describes the relationship between Cai Yuanpei and Peking University and the how he has become the president of peking university. Cai Yuanpei has deep relation with peking university. Recommendation and advice from friends and good relationships have played an important role in his taking up the post of the president of peking university.The second chapter expounds Cai Yuanpei’s association with Chen Duxiu in person employment in the early period after he entered peking university. Two people have contacted with each other in early years, combined with friends’ recommendation, Cai Yuanpei called Chen Duxiu repeatedly to hire him as art student in peking university. Their association and effort gave birth to new peking university. Meanwhile,"new youth" which hosted by Chen Duxiu took root in peking university, attracted a large number of people who are rich of reform spirit and have tremendous impact on the following new culture movement. Then, because of Tang Ersen, Shen yingmo and etc, Chen Duxiu has to leave peking university, although this is also reluctant to Cai but can do nothing.The third chapter is about the effect of various forces in1919resignation on Cai Yuanpei. This event may reflect complex human relation in education at that time. Centered on Cai, various forces around Cai attempted to exert influence. Eventually, peple who affect Cai’s decisions are Tang Erhe and Jiang Menglin.The fourth chapter fouces primarily on the development of internal facitional fighting in peking university. It emphasizes how fational fighting aroung Cai happened and deepen in peking university. To compete for turf, all forces surround Cai to form their own situation. Facing the inside and outside of the complex environment under double pressures in Peking University, Hu Shi and Cai Yuanpei’s tacit cooperation of inevitably became outside of the attack of the object.All the time, Cai want to develop university into academic place where foucues on profound knowledge research. Meanwhile, internal factional fighting in peking university and the fierce political competition of the external situation will no doubt makes Cai feels disappointing and helpless. This is another reason why Cai did not back to peking university after he returned from Europe.The conclusion chapter summarizes Cai’s association with scholars when he served as the president of peking university. First, Cai’s smoothly taking up the post of the president of peking university has close relation with the fast rising of intellectuals from Zhejiang in late Qing dynasty. Second, Cai’s friends, expecially friends from Zhejiang, have significant impact on Cai’s decision on some important matters. Third, by examing Cai’s association with scholars when he serverd as the president of peking university, he revealed many difficulties. As the president of university, he had to face many "irrelevant wound" for any sake.
