The overall objective of English curriculum in the stage of basic education is to cultivatestudents’ comprehensive ability to use English. Homework, as part of teaching is a way ofdetecting the teaching effect and students’ personal learning, as well as a good opportunity forout-of-class learning. Therefore, cultivation of comprehensive ability of language is closelyrelated to homework. The study on English homework is very important to improve theeffectiveness of the design, evaluation and management of English homework.Based on a careful study of the related literature both at home and abroad, the author dida survey of the current situation of English homework in a senior high school in Yantai fromits quantity, style and content, and evaluation and management, with both students andteachers as subjects.The results showed that most students spent half an hour to an hour to finish Englishhomework each day, a few students spent more than an hour; most teachers expected theirstudents to finish their homework within half an hour every day, but teachers’ estimation oftime to finish homework was overoptimistic; the quantity of homework was a little too much.Most students didn’t like the present styles with too many written exercises checking memory,too little listening and speaking practice; students couldn’t choose their own favoritehomework styles; most English homework was directly chosen from teaching materials,teachers seldom designed homework by themselves, students of different English levels hadthe same homework. Teachers had almost a single way of homework evaluation andmanagement, with too few exhibitions, rewards and punishments; students couldn’t take partinto their own and their classmates’ evaluation. Finally, pedagogical implications of thefindings and limitations are discussed.
