This dissertation mainly focuses on Kadoorie Public School for Chinese in the control of Shanghai Municipal Council in Modern Shanghai. The author analyzes the developing history of Kadoorie Public School for Chinese, including its school-running model, curriculum, teachers, and students.The first chapter is an introduction of Kadoorie Public School for Chinese. Ellis Kadoorie, who was a Jewish businessman from Britain, founded Ellis Kadoorie School at the beginning of1901. It was administered by the board of Shanghai Municipal Council and renamed as ’Kadoorie Public School for Chinese’. After that, school scale was expanded and school institution was improved gradually even became an elite school that well known in Shanghai. When Japanese invaders occupied Shanghai, WANG Jingwei’s Traitor Government take charge of the school and renamed it as Shanghai Special Municipal High School in November5,1942.In the second chapter, the author analyzes the training objective, school management system and student administration so as to summarize the school-running model of Yucai that possess the characteristics of English Public School. The school disaccustomed the tradition that only cultivated students with the ability of English and pluralized the training objective in order to developed students’ perfect personality. Shanghai Municipal Council, Kodoorie Family, Chinese Education Association, and Hong Kong University supervised school administrations together. Headmaster administered the school, supervised the teaching quality even coordinated the relationship between the inside and outside of school. Meanwhile, the school enacted strict student rules.The author discusses the curriculum and teaching that was characterized by ’Both Arts and Science, Mix China and Western’, and try to depict the road of schooling reform in chapter3. At the same time, we can see the characteristics of English Public School again form Yucai’s extracurricular activities. These activities were so plentiful and colorful that improved the physical and mental development of teachers and students profoundly.In chapter4, teacher staff was analyzed form the perspective of the selecting and composing of teachers, the teaching level, and teachers’ salary. All of those can show the unique teaching styles of Yucai’s teachers.The fifth chapter described the characters of Yucai’s students. We can see the student source, the quantitative change, the performance of students and some students who take part in democracy patriotic movements. We also experience Yucai students’harmonious development by analyzing the works of’Commemorative Issue of Kadoorie Public School for Chinese’.Looking back to Modern Shanghai and the development of Chinese modern education, we can get some inspirations and historical experiences form the process of schooling running of Kadoorie Public School for Chinese. Also, the author analyzes the relationship between Kadoorie Public School for Chinese and today’s Yucai High School.
