In the21st century, scientific research capability has become an important indicator of the prosperity of a country, however, it cannot improve without the continuously stable and sound development of academic people and academic profession. Ph.D. is a source of academic talents, members of scientific research team and the main successors of the future academic profession. Their profession oriention would directly influence the composition features of the future academic group and its scientific research capability, therefore, determining the country’s capacity of knowledge innovation and higher education competence.This research takes Ph.D. students from two research universities in Shanghai——Univeraity E and University J as examples, adopting structural questionnaire survey to discuss the factors affecting Ph.D. students’profession oriention and the extend of the influence. SPSS is used to conduct descriptive analysis, ANOVA, and regression analysis on data collected from106valid questionnaires. Based on the results, this paper comes to the following conclusion:Firstly, there are two dependent variables for academic profession oriention, namely the interests for academic profession Ⅰ and Ⅱ The academic profession I includes full-time research position in research institutes, full-time research position in universities and teachers in higher education, while academic profession Ⅱ includes research in corporates, governmental departments, and non-profit institutes.Secondly, the factors influencing the academic profession oriention of Ph.D. can be covered in following aspects:personality of the student, subjective factors and objective factors. Objective factors can be divided into supervisor, universities, classmates, features of academic profession. Thirdly, there is significant difference among Ph.D. students in research universities in Shanghai, depending on genders, academic fields, supervisor’s influence, universities, and companions.Fourthly, supervisor and universities have significant influence over Ph.D. students’academic profession oriention among all the subjective factors and objective factors.Fifthly, autonomy and stability of academic profession have significant influence over Ph.D. students from two universities.Based on the above conclusions, this paper proposes several suggestions for training Ph.D. students.
