Abstract The university students’life area has changed a lot following with the college logistics socialization reform, the enrolment expansion in colleges and the launching of the total credit system since1990s. Dormitory is the relative fixed unit in university campus. The concept of students’life area is bringed forword and carried out. Students’life area becomes the important place for university students’ life, communication and study, it can influence students’ thoughts and action. So, how to seize this important place is becoming a question that scholars and ideological and political education workers in universities must face and think about. This paper based on other people’s research results and adopts scientific research methods such as literature research, questionnaire survey and investigation research and interview which carried out in three universities in Shanghai. This paper attempts to combine theoretical research with empirical investigation and provide some specific measures that can be operated to strengthen the ideological and political education in university students’ life area. This paper includes three parts.The first part states the intension and necessity of ideological and political education in university students’ life area. Firstly, it introduced the university students’ life area’s intension, organizational management mode and origin and the intension of the ideological and political education in university students’ life area. Then, it explained the importance of students’ life area. It’s the primary place for students’daily life, study and entertainment. It’s the place for students’ communication with each other and emotional attachment. It’s also the stage for students’ quality development and growth. Ideological and political education in life area has some characteristics such as livingly, emotionality, permeability and centrality. Carrying out the ideological and political education in university students’ life area is order to carry out the principle of "Three Closes to", to enhance the education function of students’ life area, to supplement university students’ work, to strengthen the pertinence and effectiveness of university students’ ideological and political education, to promote students’ comprehensive capabilities.The second part introduces the basic information of the investigation. Through the literature research and investigation in SJTU, ECNU and SHU, it discovered problems and analyzed their reasons. Recently, some universities have discerned the necessity of ideological and political education in students’ life area. There also exist some problems, for example, students’ acceptance of carried out ideological and political education in students’ life area needs to improve, workers in students’ life area have fear of difficulty, excavation of life area’s education resource is not enough. Reasons are that, the position of the ideological and political education in students’ life area is not cleared, some students repel the dominant education and management, it lack the incentive mechanism and safeguard mechanism.The third part puts forward some suggestions and measures to enhance and improve the ideological and political education in university students’ life area. Firstly, it should set up the view of ideological and political education in students’ life area, clear the education function of students’ life area. Secondly, it should complete the staff for ideological and political education in students’ life area, which include instructors, managers, student themselves, logistics service personnel and tutors. Thirdly, it should combine management, service and environment with education function. Lastly, it should perfect the safeguard mechanism of ideological and political education in students’life area, such as the theory safeguard, institutional guarantee, financial security and safeguards.The paper attempts to explain some questions of ideological and political education in students’ life area. It discusses life area’s importance from its origin, it explores the feasibility of ideological and political education in students’ life area from its necessity, it puts forward measures from its problems. Some contents of the paper were seldom mentioned in previous research, such as the origin and importance of students’ life area. They are stated detailedly in this paper. Besides, it demonstrates the feasibility of ideological and political education in students’ life area, which is not involved in other people’s paper. It states the speciality of ideological and political education in students’life area particularly and it research deeply from three dimensions which are Management Education, Service Education and Environment Education.
