A Research On The History Of Running Yali Middle School (1906-1951)

Yali Middle School was a Christian middle school which was founded in China by Yale-in-China of America. Its predecessor was Yali Academy founded in1906in Changsha Hunan province. This thesis studies the history before1951, the year when Chinese government took over Yali Middle School. This period was the most tortuous and brilliant for the development of Yali Middle School. During this period, it gained great achievements which laid the foundation for Yali to be a hundred-year-famous school. The thesis has been divided into five parts.The first part analyses the background of the founding of Yali Middle School. After the Opium War, Chinese Traditional education was becoming weaker and weaker. It faced with collapsing. People of insight began to explore Western culture while the missionary force was penetrating China. With such a background, Yale-in-China was founded, and then It came to China.The second part introduces the developing process of Yali Middle School. It can be divided into four periods:preliminary development period from1906to1928, development of restoration period from1928to1938, relocation during the World War Ⅱ period from1938to1946, reform after World War Ⅱ period from1946to1951.The third part analyses the characteristics of running Yali Middle School from three different aspects. In terms of curriculum, both Chinese and English were highly valued. Science also had a high place, religious education played an important role in Yali, integrated development was emphasized here. In terms of student management, Yali Middle School carried out efficient boarding school system, strict system of promoting or holding back students and system about "brothers", it also payed great attention to the students’moral character Training. Yali had a teacher-group which was well educated, high teaching ability and great professional ethics. The system of bachelor teacher was one of its characteristics, too.The fourth part summarized the efficiency of running Yali middle school.
