The traditional models of geography teaching focused only on imparting knowledge to students, neglected the cultivation of students’ abilities. It did’t meet the needs of the development of the modern education. Besides, the traditional models of geography teaching are not closely linked to the contents of geography and the psychological characteristics of the middle school students, so it can’t achieve the best teaching efficiency. Thus, We must innovate the model of geography teaching.We have constructed the model of geography teaching in junior high school, which is a model of using a map to guide teaching. It was constructed by experiment and research on teaching, according to the contents of geography in junior high school and the physiological characteristics of junior high school students, based on the domestic and foreign study. This model fully emphasizes the function of the map, and requires that teachers should use maps as a teaching tool to introduce and guide the teaching of geography in geography classes. The model of using maps to guide geography classroom teaching in junior high school is systematically studied, through teaching experiments, questionnaire and observation. This paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, the content, characteristics and functions of the teaching models are elaborated theoretically, and some main domestic and foreign teaching models were introduced simply. The second part elaborates the background, theory base, basic characteristics and operating procedures of this teaching model. In Part Three, the experimental results of the teaching model are investigated and analyzed and a conclusion was drawn. It has proved that this teaching model can stimulate students’ interest, develope students’ capability, improve students’ achievement of learning geography and the efficiency of geography classroom teaching in junior high school.
