This is a study about the effects of movie class on EFL learning motivation and achievement of secondary vocational schools’students. The problem of teaching students’ effectively always troubles English teachers in secondary schools. Because most of secondary vocational schools’students failed in Entrance Exam for senior secondary schools and have a low level in English proficiency and EFL learning motivation. So the author of the thesis introduces the movie class to the students in the secondary vocational schools and tries to explore the effects of movie class on the EFL learning and motivation.Firstly, the author has an overall review on the study of the movie teaching in China and foreign countries, the advantages of the movie teaching and the principles of the selecting movies. The educators in China and foreign countries have paid more attention on the EFL teaching with movies long before. However, the researches about movie teaching in language classes are still precious and sporadic in China. Most of the studies focus on the speaking or listening by movie teaching. What’s more, most of these researches focus on colleges or universities. Few researches focus on the secondary school students, especially the secondary vocational students. Secondly, in order to justify the application of this method from theoretical point of view, the author then gives a brief introduction to some related theories:the motivation theories, the Input Hypothesis, the Affective Filter Hypothesis, and the Context Theory. They provide the theoretic basis for this new method. Then the author take an experimental research on the99research subjects from two classes in a secondary vocational school in Handan City with some research methods, such as, questionnaires, tests, interviews. The research lasted one semester, about18weeks. The experimental class takes an English movie class once a week.6movies are chosen in the class according to the content ot the text and the characters of the studems. The control class had the traditional English teaching. The result showed that the level of the EFL learning motivation in the experimental class improved greatly. It is significantly higher than that in the control class. Among of them, the intrinsic motivation and the intensity motivation is significantly higher than that in the control class. The extrinsic motivation in the experimental class is higher than that in the control class, but it is not significant. Meanwhile, the achievement of EFL learning in the experimental class is significant higher than that in the control class after the experiment.Consequently, we can draw the conclusion that movie class can arouse the EFL learning motivation and enhance EFL learning achievement of students in secondary vocational schools. This research offers an effective supplement method for English teaching. At the same time, the evaluation and suggestions are collected from the questionnaire, interview in class and they offer rich materials for later movie teaching in secondary vocational schools.
