Based on the characteristics of the mass, this paper analyzes its development andchanging from the handwritten wall posters, Xidan democracy wall to network. Fromwhich we may know how it come about. Some Medias such as handwritten wall posters,and network always use assertions, influence and suggestions as means of communication,which is the cause of shallow layer. Furthermore, there are four profound reasons: firstly,the mass are inclined to lose themselves in a kind of public fever, in other words, it isdifficult for one to think while he is applauding. Secondly, the mass often place too muchcredit in the organizations or individuals from which they get information. The lack ofskepticism turns them into creatures living in a cave, never do whom dare to take a stepinto the outside world. Thirdly, people, as individuals, always suffer a kind of survivalanxiety, realizing that they are so small and limited in so big a word. As a result, the masstend to react strongly and even attack others when some trivial events on the network hurttheir hearts. Last but not the least, to escape from duties, an individual would ratherchooses to follow others than make a choice on his own, even at the cost of freedom. Afterfinding out the reasons, this paper takes Liang Qichao and Hu Shi as examples, making areview of the thought of individualism and liberalism in Chinese modern enlightenment.And then we can find that because of the specific historical conditions of China, especiallythe lack of subjectivity and participation people of Enlightenment, the slogans of“democracy” and “science” were impaired by the mass. In view of the above, we are nowre-advocating enlightenment and placing hopes on the purification of internet environment.However, the most fundamental way is to improve the overall quality of the nation,reshape and develop individualism and accomplish the theory of “the rearing of a realman.”...
