College students, as the hope of the nation and the future of the nation, shoulder the heavy responsibility to become their nation prosperous and strong. Their moral quality will play a crucial role in promoting the national development. While the effectiveness of the moral education in colleges and universities affects the college students’moral level. But at present, our nation’moral education in colleges and universities can not keep pace with the times. There are many shortcomings on the teaching mode、the teaching content and so on, which make the phenomenon of the college students’ moral decline exist generally. Therefore how to improve the effectiveness of the moral education attract social circles’especially education experts’ attention.The service learning, raised in the United States, has played a tremendous role in improving the students’civic responsibility because of its advantages. The service learning is a kind of new teaching idea or a teaching method with the combination of the academic learning and the community service. It emphasizes the students’criticizing and reflection in the processing of the learning、the mutual benefit of a college and the socia、the diversity of the teaching factors、the differences in students and so on. This paper researches this topic from three aspects mainly through four methods such as literature analysis, historical research method, comparative analysis and case analysis. Firstly, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the service learning. Secondly, this paper analyzes the situation of lack of effectiveness of our nation’moral education. Thirdly, this paper proposes how to improve the effectiveness of the moral education in our nation through drawing lessons from the service learning.The service learning, as a brand-new teaching concept or a teaching method, has made some achievements in colleges and universities in the United States, but our nation can not copy completely this teaching mode. The situation of each country is different. Therefore, our nation’moral education must adjust measures to local conditions in the process of reform and each college and each university must absorb selectively some advantages from the service learning according to their own conditions. However, some questions can not be researched further in this paper. For example, which factors should be paid attention to and which measures should be adopted need to be researched further.
