With the development of modern times and the changing ofcollege students, moral education in colleges and universities needs tofollow the times and update frequently. It has to go into community, notlimited in class, and be more targeted, practical and efficient. Taken2008Beijing Olympic Games as an opportunity, the prosperousdevelopment of the youth volunteer activity attract more and moreattention from state to individuals. Volunteerism has four characteristics,they are voluntary, freely, public welfare and organized. Besides thefour characteristics above, college volunteer activity has its own uniquecharacteristics, which are innovative, practical and educational, as itsmembers are almost college students. These characteristics makecollege volunteer service add new contents, create new ways andexplore new territory for college moral education work. Nowadays, thecollege volunteer service is still at the beginning stage in our country asit comes into being during1980s. We need to do the better reliabilityand validity empirical research if we want to improve the managementlevel of volunteer service in colleges and universities and develop itsmoral education value.This study, which selects S University in Shanghai as a case, strives toexplore volunteer service in colleges and universities to carry out itsmoral value, by the method of literatures research, interviews,participation observation and questionnaire survey. As a key universityin Shanghai, S University is a comprehensive local university with salientfeatures of teacher training and particular strength in liberal arts. SUniversity, who attaches great importance to the volunteer service, isthe only one "Outstanding Volunteer Service Organization" in Shanghaiand one of the first five “United Nations Volunteer Service forDevelopment Cooperation Base In Shanghai”. S University also is granted the honor of "Advanced group of2010Shanghai Expo",received the title of "China Top Ten Outstanding Youth ServiceCollective". It has a high research value to conduct a typical case studyof S University in volunteer service and its moral education value. Byreading through literatures, interviews and participant observation,combined with rich volunteer service experience of myself, I proposeconceptual frameworks of two research questions, which are "collegevolunteer service status" and "the moral education value of collegevolunteer service". The questionnaire, which is determined after stagesof pre-surveys and questionnaires, item analysis, factor analysis, includesindividual and school as two levels of college volunteer service status.The former includes grade, gender, political affiliation, experience ofstudent leader and other basic personal information, also contents theinformation of volunteer service type, total time of service, expectedreward and difficulties encountered in volunteer service. School levelincludes the social impact of the college volunteer service, ways ofvolunteer service information dissemination and period, service timeand position settings of volunteer service. Moral education value isdivided into two levels, individual aspect, including personaldevelopment and emotional gains, and social dimension whichincludes social responsibility and political awareness, in addition to thesense of dedication of both the individual level and social dimension ofvalue.Using the data of460volunteers, I summarized college volunteerservice status in personal status and type of volunteer service as twoindexes, compared the differences on the moral education value ofdifferent personal status in five factors. I found total service time ofvolunteer is the main factor which affects the moral education value ofthe college volunteer service.Combined with analysis and summary of the situation of college volunteer service, I recommend colleges and universities to carry outservice-learning, which can integrate the hours of volunteer service andcourse, as an main tool in moral education. Service-learning canguarantee enough time of volunteer service by the mean of countingcredits. In addition, the contents of volunteer service is enriched, the skillneeded in volunteer service is practiced and the deep meaning ofvolunteer service can be reflected.
