Independent study has become a heated approach to push people’s lifelong learning,which is a learning way that satisfies the development of times.The thesis researches on student’s ability for independent study, which is based onthe previous research results and directed by modern teaching theory. The researchadopts the methods of literature research and investigation research. First, the thesisanalyzes the characteristics and connotation as well as the theory of mathematics,second, it demonstrates the problems and the causes of them in mathematicsindependent study so as to set up a new model for class teaching and homeworkassigning in the three steps, before class, in class, and after class, which consequentlyfurther the development of the students’ ability for independent study.The research has shown that, under the requirement of the new curriculum standard,teachers are supposed to give the students more, such as how to guide students to think,explore, and communicate so as to acquire more knowledge, improve the ability,develop the logic and learn how to carry out independent study more than just learnknowledge andskills.“self-independence”,“self-focused”,“self-discipline” are the threemain characteristics of independent study. However, there are a large number ofproblems in independent study, for instance, how to make the independent study to befreely and self consciously. The problems lie with the teachers; consequently, theteachers should change their beliefs and explore more efficient teaching methods, andgive more guidance to the students to improve the ability for independent study.The thesis is focused on the connotation of the independent study, lay stress on thekey and principals of the independent study, based on the text, explore and design thethree links, and set up a new model for class teaching and home assigning, whichpromotes the students’ ability for independent study.
