With the implementation of the National English Curriculum for Senior High School(2003), a reform in education is needed. The new curriculum stresses that students should bethe centre of education.“Students’ development is the start and final of education.” Teachersmust cherish students’ uniqueness and their feelings in the learning process. However, intraditional teaching, due to students’ different levels, part of students’ needs is not satisfied. Some students lose their interests in class, which severely hinders their future development.Leveled teaching has been given more and more attention in recent years. The thesis aims totest the effectiveness and feasibility of the application of leveled teaching in high school. In the thesis, the writer gives the definition of leveled teaching and states its developmentboth abroad and in China, theoretical framework and experiment design. For the experiment,86students enrolled in2009are subjects. In Grade One, they were taught with traditionalteaching, but from Grade Two, they were classified into2levels based on their score andstudents’ own will. Through classification of teaching aims, designs, homework andevaluation, they were taught with leveled teaching. Some samples of leveled teaching inEnglish class are illustrated to make a clear presentation. Through the comparison of theirEnglish scores and learning state before the experiment and after the experiment, theeffectiveness and feasibility of leveled teaching are tested. To ensure the accuracy of theexperiment, the research takes such instruments as questionnaires, an interview, observations,pre-test and post-test papers. Data analysis is done with SPSS16.0.The findings of the research uncovers that leveled teaching can improve class teachingefficiency, helps students form a good English learning habit, arouse students’ interest inEnglish class and protect students’ self-esteem.
